The Kuban State University team returned to Krasnodar with gold of the XII European Student Football Championship, which finished the day before in Portugal.
"This was the hardest-fought tournament of all eight championships in which the university team participated. The experience is truly memorable. The victory was gained at an additional time in the hard fight against the footballers of Lille University from France. The rivals were equal, but our team spirit, the character and desire to win were stronger," told the Rector of Kuban State University Mikhail Astapov.
He also pointed out that for the eighth consecutive year Russia, in this most prestigious European tournament of the continent among students, is represented by the team of Kuban State University as the winner of the Russian football Championship among students.
Chief of the department of physical culture and sports of Krasnodar administration Anatoly Miroshnikov and Chief of the city department of youth affairs Georgy Pronkin, relatives, friends, fellow-students and lecturers of Kuban State University greeted the winners in the airport of Krasnodar.
As Mikhail Astapov underlined, the team had won gold twice and become prizewinner five times since 2010. This is especially significantly considering the fact that rivals were athletes from such football countries as Portugal, France, Germany, Spain. Today, thanks to the victory of the Kuban university team Russia ranked first in the student football ranking. It is followed by Germany and Spain.
Mikhail Astapov added that participation in the European Championships greatly contributed to the intensity of international contacts between universities.
In addition to a rich sports program — six matches over seven days, the delegation from Krasnodar established news contacts and signed documents on cooperation in the sphere of education and science with the Rector of the University of Porto. Earlier in the course of the European Championships, such agreements had been signed with the University of Montpellier in France and the University of Almeria in Spain.
The ХII European Student Football Championship was held from 24 to 30 July in Porto. At the start of tournament Krasnodar students lost to opponents from the French Bordeaux, but then on the way to the final they beat the teams from Romania, Portugal, Switzerland and Norway. In the final decisive match of the Russian and French collectives, our students won the Lille University team with a score of 2:1. Totally 15 men teams participated in the European Championship.
